Tiarina, voluntary work in museum

26 June 2013

National Careers ServiceThe National Careers Service was recommended to Tiarina* by her local library so she booked a face to face appointment with a National Careers Service adviser. She was looking for help with securing a job and information about careers she could pursue in the future. Tiarina is Italian and has been studying English for some time to further improve her job prospects here.

The adviser explored a number of different avenues with Tiarina to improve her employability and prepare her for the job market. Together they worked on an action plan to give Tiarina a clear perspective of the steps she would need to take. The adviser helped Tiarina develop her CV, showed her examples of covering letters and gave her tips on interview techniques.

Tiarina had gained experience in her home country and was keen to to the same within the UK job market. The adviser suggested voluntary work as a good starting point and began researching this for Tiarina. They used the “Do It” website to apply for placements. Tiarina was interviewed for and accepted a position at an art and history museum.

Tiarina is exploring other actions to help her achieve her goals set in her action plan which will eventually lead her to fulfil her ambition to be employed permanently as a curator within a museum. She has already recommended the National Careers Service to a friend.
