Recently, Bexley Youth Advice hosted 130 young people, aged 16 -19, for an interactive exhibition providing information on education, employment and training opportunities.
Young people unsure what they would be doing next year, out of education, training or employment and wanting information and advice on how to progress their career came along to meet employers and training/ education providers.
Many of the young people expressed interest in signing up to courses at Shooters Hill, Bromley, North West Kent and Hadlow colleges, apprenticeships with Skills4Growth and Reynolds Group, and pre-apprenticeships or the Youth Contract at the event. Prospects advisers provided on the spot help, support and advice to visitors. Local employers Moat, Sainsbury's, Middleton Murray and Mitie met young people and discussed vacancies.
Jody Phillips, Prospects Team Leader, said, "It was great to meet so many young people. This has been a fantastic opportunity for them to connect with employers, training and education providers and we expect the relationships started here will continue. We aimed to broaden the horizons of young people from Bexley to show them that finding a career doesn't need to be a daunting experience and we're here to support them."
One visitor, Sarah, who lives in Sidcup, feels a lot more motivated and optimistic about her future after attending the event. She said "I'm interested in fitness training and today I found a course I'm very keen on. I've got some really good information from the people on the stands so it's definitely been worthwhile."
Support is available from Bexley Youth Advice throughout the year, by dropping into the centre at 233 Broadway, Bexleyheath, Kent, DA6 7EJ between 9:30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Alternatively pre-booked appointments can be made by calling 020 3045 5555.
