Government outlines next steps on independent careers guidance; DfE Consultation result

02 January 2013

The DfE has published the results of the government's consultation on extending the duty to secure access to independent careers guidance. The report incorporates a summary of the responses to the consultation, the decisions made and how the work will be taken forward.

The Education Act 2011 requires schools to secure access to independent, impartial careers guidance for their students in years 9–11. Earlier this year, the Department for Education consulted on extending this duty to students in year 8 and those aged 16–18 in schools and colleges, from September 2013, and has now decided to do so.

Schools will not be required to buy in a particular type of careers guidance and they will be given discretion in deciding the model which is right for them. An updated version of the statutory guidance will be published in March 2013 and implementation of the extended duty will begin in September 2013.

Colleges will be consulted further but government would like to see the new requirements introduced from September 2013.
