-#myinspiration: Helping thousands of people in the South West

08 October 2015

Colleagues working for the National Careers Service in the South West have helped thousands of people take steps towards employment since October 2014.

Careers advisers have supported customer into Education, Employment and Training (EET), through Careers, Information, Advice and Guidance (CIAG) and helping them overcome barriers to work. The team has supported customers facing redundancy, by running events with Rolls Royce in Bristol, Cornwall Council and HMRC in Devon and Cornwall. They helped customers understand their options and progress into new careers.

Advisers have attended local jobs fairs supported by local organisations, including Exeter City Football Club, City of Bristol College, Hinkley Point, Ocean Housing and The Galleries Shopping Centre, signposting people to EET opportunities. Lisa Scarborough, a careers adviser, recently attended the South Devon College Jobs Fair, helping customers to write their CVs, use social media for job search, complete job applications and improve their interview techniques. Several customers received job offers on the day, and others secured job interviews.

The National Careers Service in the South West receives lots of positive customer feedback.
Eddie from Bristol, now training to be a Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) driver, said: “I have secured funding for learning. I am hoping to pass my LGV licence and then onto my C1 licence. Getting this licence will help me secure long term sustainable employment with good salary expectations. I now have an opportunity I didn’t have before. The adviser kept my motivation high and encouraged me to continue with my application.”

Jo from Bristol, who had several major barriers to work including confidence issues, said: “I have just successfully got a job as an office coordinator at a charity in Bristol which works with gangs. It’s a dream come true, great for me and my kids and the start of a new life.”
