Students from all around the UK, Spain and the US flocked to the Gabbitas in the City summer schools to meet employers and industry professionals to discuss career opportunities in a variety of fields.
Three separate, week-long programmes took place in the City of London, between 8th – 19th July. GCSE and sixth-form students travelled to the heart of the capital and experienced themed days on industries such as media, law and finance.
The students visited some of the biggest names in business, with trips to Bloomberg, the BBC, HSBC, the Royal Courts of Justice and Lloyds of London — one of the world's biggest insurance institutions, where all the groups started their week-long tours. Finance days included visits to BPP Business School, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, Deloitte, ISDA, SAVI Trading and the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments.
The media day included trips to the BBC, Bloomberg, BSKYB and Microsoft. Students considering a media career even got a chance to speak to a freelance journalist, and Gabbitas Senior Consultant and founder of First Eleven magazine, Charlotte Noel, on getting ahead in publishing. Many aspiring legal eagles were captivated on the law day with presentations at the BPP Law School, Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP, and Travers Smith before taking on a mock trial at the Royal Courts of Justice.
On the final day the students toured the Bank of England and its museum before evaluating their week in the City. "Each day has been very helpful, giving me more of an idea of what career path I want to follow," said Winchester College's William Treacher, while Hrutvik Kanabar of Eton College added, "All the speakers were very interesting, and the insights into the world that they gave us through talking about their experiences were very useful."
