#CareerRefresh: Benefits of learning new skills

14 January 2015

Today, Trudy Nieto (@TrudyProspects), National Careers Service Adviser and Prospects colleague explores why learning a new skill can broaden more than just your skill base.

Learning new skills can help you gain confidence, increase your self-esteem, open up new opportunities and help you fulfil your aspirations. Reflecting and identifying your strengths along with areas in need of development can increase your prospects of a more fulfilling career.

Learning new skills or discovering things you are good at boosts confidence and self-esteem. This, in turn, can lead to a greater openness to self-improvement, sense of well-being and even happiness. Learning new skills can help give you a better sense of direction so you can start to clarify your future direction and plan ways to achieve your goals.

Visit the National Careers Service website and take the Skills Health Check to identify your strengths and areas for development. You can also look at the National Careers Service Job Profiles to find job related information and the skills required to be successful in your chosen career.

Then investigate courses which could help you gain the skills you need, by looking at local providers or searching online. You could also consider volunteering in an area which would help you gain new skills related to your future career.

A National Careers Service adviser can support by offering impartial advice to help you to clarify the skills needed for your career choice, plan your future and fulfil your goals. Call 0800 100 900 to receive telephone advice or arrange a face to face appointment in your local area.
