Carrie* gets a new job at 53

“It is not easy getting a job for a 50 plus person. But with guidance, support and perseverance I was successful in getting a job with a bank”

14 October 2016

Before Prospects

Carrie* was made redundant after 15 years with the same company. At 53 she was concerned she would not be able to find suitable alternative employment.

What Prospects did

Carrie joined the National Careers Service in March 2016. She met her adviser, Deborah, four times. In the first meetings they looked at the National Careers Service website and used the online tools together.

Carrie discussed her issues and Deborah helped her to register on various websites. With Deborah’s support Carrie to put together CVs tailored to the jobs she was applying for, increasing her chances of success.

Carrie’s applications were successful and she had two interviews, one with the NHS and one with Metrobank.  Having never been interviewed for a job Carrie was nervous and felt she needed further support to improve her interview technique. Deborah guided her through interview techniques, putting her at ease and helping her to think clearly. Deborah explained how to remain calm and answer the questions at the interview. She explained the STAR interview technique, and Carrie used this at both interviews.

Outcomes and results

Carrie was successful and is now working at Metrobank as a payments specialist. Carrie was pleased she contacted the National Careers Service and received guidance and support. She felt she would not have succeeded as quickly on her own and has now recommended the service to her cousin.

Carrie comments: “I am now employed at age 53. In full time employment. This is a great achievement. My confidence has improved and I am enjoying working again in a professional environment.”

Carrie is now setting her sights at promotion and aims to be a team leader for payments.

Carrie continues: “I was made redundant after 15 years.  Hence I was nervous about facing an interview and I didn’t have a CV either. It is not easy getting a job for a 50 plus person. But with guidance, support and perseverance I was successful in getting a job with a bank.  A big thank you to my adviser, Deborah, who helped me through this ordeal.”
