Darren* found it difficult to talk to people face to face

“The interventions seem to be well planned with something to learn.”

13 October 2016

Before Prospects

Darren*, aged 22, lives in St Austell. He achieved good GCSE passes in maths, science and IT.  He had been unemployed for more than a year having previously completed some administrative work experience with a coach company.

Darren has communication and learning difficulties, finding it difficult to talk to people face to face.

What Prospects did

Darren joined the Work Programme with Prospects.  He worked with a personal adviser to complete employability training including specialist support on how to apply for jobs, interview practice and job searching all focussing on improving Darren’s communication skills. His adviser supported him to complete training with other providers including Cornwall College.

To help Darren, his personal adviser explained employment legislation and the application process. This enabled Darren to be proactive when job hunting and clear about what a potential employer would expect from him and what he could expect from an employer.

Darren undertook eight months of work experience with Prospects, where he worked for a short time each week answering incoming telephone queries and undertaking reception duties in a safe environment.

Outcomes and results

Darren felt Prospects were understanding and able to comprehend his needs. His personal adviser was always there when he needed help providing structure, encouragement and motivation.

Darren is now much more confident, more capable of working with others and has gained employment with a logistics company. He aims to progress within the company.

He says of Prospects:  “Effective, the staff are always friendly and the interventions seem to be well planned with something to learn.”
