Apprentice Lucy talks about careers in property

10 June 2016

“I didn’t realise how many opportunities were available to me.”

Before Prospects

Students at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy were invited to attend a talk about careers in property. A growing sector, property careers are relatively unfamiliar to the students. The talk focussed on apprenticeship routes, employment and subsequent progression by Lucy Hunt, an apprentice surveyor with CBRE.

What Prospects did

The event was brokered by the Inspiration Agenda Team from National Careers Service London, a Prospects delivered contract.

Prospects introduced the event and provided an introduction to apprenticeships and an overview around the facts and figures. Lucy then spoke to the 16 year 10 and year 12 students. Lucy, who left school in June 2015 was able to share her recent experiences and describe her decision to pursue an apprenticeship, her current work and studies.

Lucy then spoke individually to two of the sixth formers who are considering apprenticeship routes. She explained the recruitment process at CBRE, the Chartered Surveyors Training Trust and Find an Apprenticeship.

Outcomes and results

The talk provided students with an insight into the property sector – which is growing in London. Students were able to find out about the range of roles available and variety of different apprenticeships in the sector for young people at age +16 and +18.

Lucy emphasised the importance of personal skills and qualities. The talk helped to dispel myths around apprenticeships such as wages, recruitment and progression into higher education.  At the end Lucy said: “The sixth formers really took on board what we were saying and it seemed to help.”

Comments from the students confirmed this: “I was surprised by the amount of activities property investors do.” “I never realised how many apprenticeships there were.” “I didn’t realise how many opportunities were available to me.”

Georgia Caton, the Careers & Transitions Co-ordinator at the school commented: “Thank you very much for today. It was amazing to see the students interacting with you, especially the sixth form students.”
