Mental health help on Ascent programme gets Sean* a job in horticulture

09 July 2015

Before Prospects

Sean's* anxiety and depression were a major barrier to him returning to work . He even found it difficult to leave the house and socialise.

What Prospects did

Sean joined the Work Programme, provided by Prospects as a prime contractor in the South West. Prospects has developed the Ascent Programme to help customers take steps into education, training or employment through a series of interventions, which address their personal and professional barriers.

Sean's adviser offered him support with his mental health issues, and referred him to Pentreath, a local organisation which promotes good mental health through personal development, education and employment, and Cornwall Neighbourhoods for Change (CN4C), which aims to improve people's lives and create better places to live.

Sean's Work Programme adviser helped him by enrolling him onto interventions, or training sessions, aimed at improving his employability and skills, including CV writing, interview preparation, apply now sessions (events where candidates were supported in applying for jobs), and Coracle building/training programme.

In due course Sean's adviser helped him secure a place on the Retail Route Way Course at Cornwall College.

Outcomes and results

Sean responded well to the support he received from Pentreath and Cornwall Neighbourhoods for Change CN4C. Sean worked successfully with his adviser and completed the interventions.

Sean is now working in horticulture, which was his aim. His adviser is continuing to provide support, and recently helped Sean write a business case to enable him to purchase a pushbike to commute to work, as Sean does not currently hold a full drivers licence.

Sean feels the interventions, and the support he received from his adviser, was fundamental in getting him 'out of the house' and into work.

Sean particularly enjoyed the Coracle course and the team work involved.

Sean found his experience with Prospects very positive, and the advisers were friendly, supportive and knowledgeable.
