Tara gets back to basics

25 June 2015

Do you #lovetolearn? Adult Learners' Week is a national celebration of lifelong learning; the biggest in England. The Festival of Learning brings together organisations across the country to offer thousands of opportunities for anyone and everyone to learn something new.

As part of the Festival, hundreds of organisations hold learning events and activities that inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to ‘have a go’ and discover how learning can change their life. To find your local events please visit www.alw.org.uk

Tara from Bexley wanted to do something with her life. As a young mum looking after her son she wasn’t sure which direction to take. She wanted career direction and this is when she got in touch with the National Careers Service. The National Careers Service provides information, advice and guidance to help you make decisions on learning, training and work opportunities. The service offers confidential and impartial advice. This is supported by qualified careers advisers.

After meeting with her local careers adviser Tara identified that she had the following skills: determination, ambition, positive attitude, keen to learn and forward thinking. All these helped Tara make a decision to improve on her English and Maths GCSE results. The adviser suggested Tara start a functional skills course in English and Maths.

Tara’s long term goal is to be a professional support worker such as a counsellor, youth worker or mentor and she has already started her journey.

Tara said “going into learning has given my life a bit more purpose and routine. I look forward to attending my classes and I feel more positive about my future. My confidence has increased and feel I can achieve academically”
