Redundancy helped David identify his barriers
Do you #lovetolearn? Adult Learners' Week is a national celebration of lifelong learning; the biggest in England. The Festival of Learning brings together organisations across the country to offer thousands of opportunities for anyone and everyone to learn something new.
As part of the Festival, hundreds of organisations hold learning events and activities that inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to ‘have a go’ and discover how learning can change their life. To find your local events please visit www.alw.org.uk
David from Hackney’s story is one that shows how being made redundant after 10 years as a picture framer worked in his favour. After losing his job David felt disappointed, frustrated and at the same time his confidence dropped. He then decided to seek professional advice from the National Careers Service provided by Prospects. His adviser listened to him and helped identify and offer solutions to overcome his barriers. David was interested in doing a BTEC or diploma in joinery and carpentry but had no English or maths qualifications needed to enrol on the course. With the help from the adviser David enrolled on to a level 2 maths course locally and intends to enrol in a similar English course. Once David achieves his qualifications he will be applying for a BTEC or diploma in joinery or carpentry.
David was really pleased with the advice he received and said “I am aware of what I need and how to get there, if I did not contact the National Careers Service I would still be confused about how to achieve an English and maths qualification. The best thing about contacting the National Careers Service was to identify my barriers. All this has improved my confidence and motivated me to go forward.”
