* Name has been changed.
Yolande *is 24 years old and was referred to the National Career Service in preparation for an upcoming interview; she also needed some tips for writing cover letters.
In her first session, Yolande explained to the adviser that she had been unemployed for a year and had previously completed a BTEC National Certificate in Business. Yolande also had some previous temping experience in this sector, but was looking for a customer service role in retail. She was concerned that interviewers would look unfavourably on the gap in her work history and was lacking confidence due to the high level of competition.
The adviser wanted to improve Yolande’s knowledge on preparing cover letters. They discussed useful tips and Yolande was given fact sheets that included more information on the topic, as well as good examples.
At this time, Yolande had been invited to interview for a permanent Customer Service role in the retail sector. She had previously been unaware of the information available on National Careers Service through the website and was directed to the Interviews page by her adviser.
Yolande was also given mock individual and group interviews to prepare her. She was very nervous about the group interview as she did not have experience of this; the adviser reassured her and they also looked at competency questions together.
Yolande later attended the interview and was offered the job; she was very happy and felt her National Careers Service sessions were very productive.
Yolande felt she would have been unprepared without the assistance of the National Careers Service adviser and is now looking forward to a long career in the Customer Service sector.
