Gemma from Sutton was unhappy in her job as a childcare worker and wanted to change career and improve her prospects. She was keen to train as a midwife but was put off because she felt she lacked required qualifications.
Gemma received careers advice from the National Careers Service, delivered by Prospects across London, who were supportive and encouraged her to follow her dreams. The first step to realising her potential was to gain a GCSE in maths. Gemma’s lack of confidence in her skills was overcome quickly when she was able to access additional learning support and one-to-one sessions with a tutor.
As Gemma’s confidence grew her adviser suggested she start volunteering in a maternity unit. Together they researched contacts and Gemma approached the ward sister at St Helier Hospital. Following an interview Gemma was offered volunteering at the maternity ward and is enjoying her time at the hospital.
Gemma is still working towards her career goals and with the help of her advisers has now applied for a Midwifery Degree at University.
Gemma feels great and confident about her future: “I know my career goals are going to be realised. My parents are also very proud and grateful for the advice, support and encouragement I have been given.
“I am in a better place now. I feel that I am aware of my weaknesses but able to ask for help to achieve. I am more focused on my career goals and how to get there.”
