The Pavilions welcomes 11 young people with learning difficulties onto specialist training course

17 September 2019

11 young people with learning difficulties are beginning a specialist year-long course to equip them with retail skills at The Pavilions Shopping Centre, Uxbridge.

The Prospects Supported Internship is an unpaid learning programme specifically aimed at young people aged 17 to 24 who have a statement of special educational needs or an EHC plan, who want to move into employment and need extra support to do so.

During the course, the Interns will learn skills which will equip them to obtain permanent paid work at the end of the internship. Some of the skills that they will develop include resilience, communication and practical skills relating to specific job roles within the host business.

In addition, the Interns will have daily support from a job coach while they are on their work placement, who will help them create and update their CVs as well as coach them with interview techniques and other skills required to help them find a sustainable job which can lead to a career.

One of the interns, Bezhan, said: “I enjoyed looking at the different places to experience and meet all the staff working.”

Andrew Wilkinson, Prospects Operations Director, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with The Pavilions Shopping centre, Uxbridge to provide this specialist course to help our Interns gain the skills they will need to lead an independent life. At Prospects we have more than 20 years’ experience working with young people to help them develop their potential. I am looking forward to hearing about the successes of our Interns.”

Aaron Bayliss, Centre Manager at The Pavilions, said: “It is a privilege to be working with the Prospects team on this valuable initiative, the aims and intentions of which we wholeheartedly support. We are delighted to be able to play a small role in these journeys, and wish every intern success in their placement.”
