Skills Scotland Edinburgh - Drummond Community School
A trip to Skills Scotland Edinburgh for students from Drummond Community School.
What Prospects did
Mia, 14, Cokey, 15, Jade, 15, and Josie, 14 from Drummond Community's S4 shared their experiences of the Skills Scotland Edinburgh.
They unanimously enjoyed the interactivity and variety of careers and opportunities offered at the event.
They had tried the hair and beauty demos, learned about CPR, had a go on the smoothie bike, made burgers and tried different foods.
The girls were clear that the best bit about the attending Skills Scotland was that people didn't try to tell you want to do, learning was student led, with participants doing an activity and learning about the different careers by just chatting to the staff on the stands - not being lectured at! This made the show different from in-school careers sessions where previously speakers had come into school and just talked – which got a clear thumbs down from the students. At Skills Scotland you could experience different careers – not just the ones you thought you were interested in, expanding your choices.
The students felt they were the right age to attend the event as they had already made their options and were able to explore the different choices now available to them.
Outcomes and results
The students tried new work-based activities.
The students felt the show was inspirational because it offered a taster and helped them narrow down their choices as they had previously been "clueless" about what to do.
