NEWS RELEASE: Prospects to put “education at the heart of detention” at Feltham Young Offenders Institution

15 December 2014

Prospects, the education, employment and training company, has been selected to provide education for all young people within Feltham Young Offenders Institution (YOI) for the next five years.

The Government has set out its vision to put more emphasis on education in youth custody to equip young offenders with qualifications and skills to break the cycle of reoffending when they leave detention. In addition to placing more emphasis on education for young offenders, the new contract announced today, will increase the number of hours a young person in custody spends in education each week.

Prospects already plays a role in helping to reduce reoffending by providing the National Careers Service In Custody to offenders in all prisons in London, the South West, West Midlands and Yorkshire and the Humber. Prospects increase opportunities for offenders, helping them to access support and tackle their barriers to employment in the resettlement phase of the sentence and through the gate as they return to the community.

Nick Bell, Chief Executive of Prospects, said:
“We look forward to working with The Ministry of Justice, The Youth Justice Board and Feltham YOI as we deliver this new, innovative focus on education.  Placing more importance on education for young people in custody will help raise aspirations and open their eyes to the alternative futures available to them. Clearly there should be appropriate punishment, as decided by the courts, and each young offender should learn to take responsibility for their actions but they should also be able to gain skills and qualifications in order that  once their sentence is served they are prepared for the rest of their life, leaving crime behind.”
