Local MP enjoys visit to Prospects

On Wednesday 15 February, local MP for Truro and Falmouth, Sarah Newton, visited Prospects in Truro. Prospects provides the government’s Work Programme and National Careers Service in Cornwall. Sarah was introduced to staff and customers, as well as having a tour of the office.

Sarah observed customers taking part in a speculative approach to an Ascent workshop, where they approach employers directly to identify any current or future job opportunities. The customers that take part in Ascent are people who are in long term unemployment, the Ascent workshops and one to one sessions help the customers overcome the barriers they face in finding work.

Ascent stands for – Aspiration and Motivation, Skills for the Future, Challenges, Employer Desirability, Notable Influences, Transferable and Specialist Skills.

Sarah also observed Prospects colleagues providing one to one sessions.

During these sessions, depending on how far through the programme the customer is, the advisers go through the different options the customers have, they talk about CVs, interview skills and overcoming any problems they may face before and during employment.

Once the workshop and one to one sessions were complete, Sarah had the opportunity to ask questions about the work that Prospects undertakes in Truro.

Simon Westlake Team Leader in Cornwall said: “Sarah was genuinely interested in how we operate from ground level and including how we address barriers and the supportive networks we use.”

Sarah Newton local MP said: “I enjoyed visiting Prospects in Truro. Over the past three years, the dedicated staff have helped 351 people into employment in the Duchy, often people who have been unemployed for some time. They are also enabling people to get new qualifications such as CSCS cards for construction, SIA licenses for security, basic IT qualifications including English and Maths refreshers, self-employed courses and CBT workshops.”
