From redundancy to promotion within five months, thanks to the National Careers Service
"This experience has massively improved my confidence, so much so I was promoted in my new job in just five months."
Mark was an experienced, bi-lingual software developer working in the gaming industry in London. However, following a shock redundancy he was presented with the opportunity to re-evaluate his career goals and make the best use of his unique language skills.
“I am an experienced software developer with many years of involvement working in the gaming industry and speak English and Austrian fluently. Unfortunately I was made redundant from my previous job and was finding it extremely difficult to find another job in the same field” explains Mark.
What Prospects did
“I got in contact with the National Careers Service and went for a face-to-face meeting at my local centre. I was given the opportunity to talk in detail about my long term career plans and my adviser encouraged me to focus my interest on companies who employ bi-lingual staff. I found a job that sparked my interest and I applied through a recruitment agency – I was offered an interview the very next day” he adds.
“By emphasising my second language skills I had a unique selling point to interest potential employers and I was employed by the company immediately as a tier one representative. Within five months of working for them I got promoted to tier two,” says Mark.
Outcomes and results
“If I hadn’t got in touch with the National Careers Service I never would have found out about this job opportunity and would probably still be out of work. This experience has massively improved my confidence, so much so I was promoted so quickly. I would recommend this service to everyone looking to improve their career prospects.”
