Charlie* starts a study programme

22 February 2016

Before Prospects

Charlie, 16, was at in her final year of school and considering a career in catering. She decided she would like to stay on at her current school to start a BTEC and to retake her English and maths GCSEs. Unfortunately Charlie did not do as well as she hoped and did not attain the three grade Ds she needed to continue into sixth form.

What Prospects did

Charlie contacted her Prospects adviser in October for help to look at her options, initially being interested in looking for an apprenticeship.  She was supported in considering which career to pursue and was advised about the various routes she could take. Her Prospects adviser assisted Charlie to create a CV and suggested she consider going on a study programme with a local training provider in order to improve her qualifications and gain some confidence first. Charlie saw the advantages of this programme which included GCSEs alongside functional skills up to level 2, employability up to diploma level and work experience.  As Charlie was quite anxious about new environments, her adviser organised a preliminary visit and in November accompanied her to have a look around and talk to the staff there.  Charlie felt more relaxed after this visit and decided she would like to start the programme, so her adviser contacted the provider and arranged for her to undertake the necessary initial assessments.

Outcome and results

Charlie attended her initial assessments and induction, and successfully started her study programme full time in December. When her adviser contacted her to check if everything was going ok, Charlie said: “It’s going great, I’ve settled in well and am enjoying myself. I’ve also made some new friends too.”
