21 year old Malachi is better off in work

12 April 2016

Before Prospects

Malachi was referred to the Work Programme in August 2015 by the local JobCentre Plus. He had been out of work for more than a year.

He previously worked as a paint sprayer in a factory, cleaner and apprentice grounds person. With two young children, 21 year old Malachi wanted to work as a trainee mechanic or as a gardener, having previous studied the subjects at college.

What Prospects did

When Malachi joined Prospects Work Programme he attended a number of employability training sessions. These group sessions covered topics including interview techniques, application forms, job search skills and confidence building – during which he researched and gave a five minute presentation to the group.

Malachi received individual support with online job applications and completing application forms. With his adviser, Helen, he prepared a professional CV and completed a number of mock interviews.  Malachi followed the feedback and advice given and improved his interview skills and used what he learned in the training sessions when applying for jobs.

Malachi attended the Prospects centre regularly, attending the job club twice a week and applying for jobs in a supported environment.

Malachi also completed a better off calculation with Prospects, showing how much better off he would be in work, as he would qualify for Working Tax Credits.

Outcomes and results

Malachi started a new job in March 2016 and has applied for Working Tax Credit. He is now financially better off and is looking forward to being able to support himself and give his two children treats.

He has closed his ESA claim and his self esteem and confidence have grown.

In the future he is hoping to improve his job prospects. Malachi commented: “I am very grateful to Helen at Prospects for all her help and support. The training has been excellent and being able to attend job club has been great.”
